The Drill Hall is a substantial renovation and conversion project, transforming an industrial building into co-working offices, cafe and residential apartments in the heart of Mile End. Situated along the busy Mile End Road in the East End of London the former drill hall and vehicle maintenance yard have been substantially extended to provide new accommodation which has been woven back into the complex urban grain.
HUT were briefed to transform the existing dramatic spaces for new uses whilst being sympathetic to the heritage, form and patina of the original building. New, crisp insertions meet the original fabric and retained structure creating unique and unexpected material junctions. Rooflights, translucent blocks and lightwells punctuate the plan bringing in daylight, emphasising the dramatic scale and spatial quality of the original building.
New flat roofs and light wells create ‘brownfield’ sites for native planting, encouraging wildlife and reducing rainwater attenuation. The building’s fabric has been thermally upgraded in order to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’ and EPC B. The restoration of the dilapidated building juxtaposed with the new additions brings new purpose and longevity to the unique site, cementing its place within the cityscape, street and local community.
