Clerkenwell Green

This project transforms a historic Edwardian manufacturing building on Clerkenwell Green into an adaptable mixed use space.

Central to the project’s vision is the celebration and retention of the existing building fabric which is amplified throughout the plan. The restricted and restrained apertures of the unassuming Edwardian townhouse to the front of the site opens up in the rear to reveal a dramatic, cathedral-like volume. Utilising existing foundations and constructed from CLT, the structure is designed as a modular system enabling offsite construction whilst allowing for future infills, adjustable mezzanines and adaptable stairs.

Designed as a ‘hidden gem’ in the heart of Clerkenwell’s densely populated furniture district the triple height spaces invites natural light into the building through a series of roof lights. The green roof overhead is planted with self-seeding species and is viewed from neighbouring building as a ‘secret garden’ in the middle of the city creating a welcome connection to nature.
