Clapton Townhouse

Responding to the desire to create unexpected spaces within a traditional Victorian terrace, HUT has designed a family home in East London through reconsidering the way the split levels of the house are connected. A ribbon of monolithic black through-dyed MDF forms a new staircase weaving through the Victorian structure allowing a series of stacked voids linking the dark basement with the bright upper floors. The reconfiguration also serves to unify the front and rear levels and create moments to linger on the landings. Each room has been designed for a visual connection with the newly landscaped garden. The front reception room features reinstated traditional Victorian details, whilst the removal of the rear reception room entirely creates a dramatic triple height dining room.
