The Brunel Engine Shed is the former Great Western Railway (GWR) terminus station in High Wycombe. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1854, the building is Grade II listed and is one of only 6 remaining GWR train sheds. The fabric of the building is brick and knapped flint, with exposed original timber Queen Post trusses.
The building had been extensively refurbished and extended between 2019-2020 by Buckinghamshire Council, and was acquired by Buckinghamshire New University in 2022.
HUT joined the project in 2024, working with OD Interiors to deliver the final design phase of the works, including upgrades and alterations to the building’s envelope, new passive ventilation, photovoltaic panels, heat recovery systems, and with a focus on low carbon and recycled content materials such as hemp and timber.
Whilst appointed as delivery Architects, HUT put forward several design improvements, such as reintroducing traces of the original GWR broad gauge tracks of inlaid metal within a biopolymer and cork based monolithic resin floor.
